Yo-Yo Oscillator’s DNA is built from a love of Golden Age Hip Hop, more specifically the vinyl found deep in the crates that supplied the breaks and loops that made that era’s production style so special. Recorded on vintage analogue equipment at James Johnston’s renowned Cowshed studios in North London, the four-piece blend the soulful tones of singer Lana Shelley, the heavy rhythm and blues and psychedelia soaked lead guitar shadings of Paul White, transistor organ, flat-wound bass, keys and rhythm guitar from Rory Carlile, and James Johnston’s boom-bap style live drums recorded in glorious mono. 

Their currently in production full length album takes inspiration from the great producer-and-artist song interpreter albums of the sixties, from Julie Driscoll and Brian Auger to Vanilla Fudge, David Axelrod and Lou Rawls to Johnny Harris, Oliver Nelson and Nancy Wilson to The Gentle Rain and beyond. Albums filled with weird and wonderful reinterpretations of other writer’s songs, some well known, some less so.. Yo-Yo Oscillator filter all through that Golden Age looking-for-the-perfect-break lens, that nugget at the back of the rack that nobody’s spotted yet.

Their upcoming new single on Jazz Room records, ‘No Love But Your Love’, but was first recorded by Johnny Mathis in 1957, and released as a b-side to his hit single ‘Wild Is The Wind’.    

Over the years producer Rory Carlile has collaborated with Tricky (Massive Attack), Silver Bullet, Youth (Killing Joke, Primal Scream, The Verve), Jazz Coleman (Killing Joke), Zane Lowe (Apple Music), and Jim Barr (Portishead/ Get The Blessing). He has recorded for Wall of Sound and Big Life, produced remixes for Talking Loud, Creation, Mercury Records and Universal, and as a DJ has shared the decks with Africa Bambaataa, Mantronix, Holgar Czukay, and the Chemical Brothers at venues from the Ministry of Sound to Manumission, Heaven to the Big Beat Boutique.
